Maybe put a "5 year" requirement on the fan servers: the game has to have been offline for 5 years or more before fan servers are fine. What's more, just because there's a newer version of the game doesn't mean the online version of the old game doesn't have any value anymore from a cultural or historical perspective. So, one of my favorite games is now a coaster because some party did not deign to keep the registration server alive. But no dice, and they've abandoned the case (not that I can blame them). MGS tried mightily to get my copy of HOMM V functional, even going so far as to send directions to modify one of the game's registration files. As with many Mac games, HOMM V is/was a pie made with many hands: original development by Ubisoft, Mac port by Freeverse (no longer around), marketing and sales (for me) through MacGameStore.
That is, until a couple of months ago, when the game prompted me to re-enter my registration information and – surprise! – the server that checks and validates game-copy codes is now apparently offline. It's been tons of fun to play over the last nine years, and I come back to it regularly.
